Grave Commemoration Project
The Grave Commemoration Project was setup to remember the men & women who fell during the Great War. The names of men & women who lost their lives during the Great War can be found on Memorials to the Missing or a War Grave maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission; a local War Memorial or a plaque in their local Church or place of work.
They are also remembered on the family gravestone or memorials in the local churchyard. Our aim is to visit local churchyards and cemeteries in the Merseyside & Cheshire areas and take photographs of these memorials and add the details of these men & women to a database. So far we have collected details and photographs of over 2000 gravestones.
We find these memorial more personal, a lot of the families weren't able to visit the grave or memorials overseas. So they needed somewhere closer to home where they could go and visit. As time goes by you can see from some of the pictures, a lot of these memorials are in a poor condition. Some memorials have likely already been lost, we need to record these memorials that still remain before they too are lost, so that the sacrifice of these men & women won't be forgotten.
