Presentation at The Shrewsbury Arms
For those of you who are not familiar to our branch, we hold our meetings at The Williamson Art Gallery on Slatey Road in Oxton. After our meetings many members go for refreshments at The Shrewsbury Arms which is close by in Oxton. Our Chair and Vice Chair have been researching the names on the Birkenhead War Memorial and provide biographies through their business M & F G. One of the men on the memorial 52005 Private Robin Carlyle Morland who was born in Birkenhead in 1892. He enlisted in to the 10th Bn Kings (Liverpool) Regiment in 1916. In July that year he went to France. During his service he was awarded the Military Medal for his actions during an attack on Ridge Wood. He as killed on September 1918 during the attack on Hendencourt and is buried in St Martin Calvaire Cemetery. During our recent Battlefield tour April 23rd - 30 2022 the branch visited that cemetery. unbeknown to those on the tour we had gone there to visit Robin's grave. Whilst at his grave side our chair and vice chair told us we had all been in his house. There were puzzled looks all around until we were told his living room is now part of The Shrewsbury Arms our after meeting watering whole. The manageress of the "Shrew" had even bought a wreath which we laid on his grave. The branch produced a framed photo of Robin and the cemetery where he was laid to rest. This was presented to the pub on June 21st. The photo is now hanging in what was once his living room.
