We meet at the Williamson Art Gallery
Who are the Merseyside Branch?
The Merseyside Branch of the Western Front Association (WFA) was formed more than thirty years ago and meets at 7pm on the first Friday of each month, at the Williamson Art Gallery & Museum, Slatey Road, Birkenhead, Wirral, CH43 4UE.
As well as meeting once a month, the branch also has days out visiting places with Great War interest. Every two years we have a Battlefield Tour to France and Belgium and we also have an excellent social evening in December, affectionately known as the Christmas Bash. Branch Events
As well as the once a month meetings at the Williamson Art Gallery, the branch is also involved in many other activities.
From 2013 - 2019 the branch held a Great War Exhibition in the Visitor Centre at Birkenhead Park. The branch goes on regular visits to places of interest. This can involve visiting a local area to take a walk and hear about people from that area who served in the Great War. We look at where they lived and also at any memorials or commemorations in local Churchyards and cemeteries. The Branch also travels further afield visiting sites of Great War interest. As well as our shared interest in the Great War, we also like to meet up socially. With one of those events being the "Christmas Bash". On the first Thursday of December each year we meet up at the "Refreshment Rooms", Rock Ferry, for a pre-Christmas meal. |
Branch Meetings
The Last Branch Meeting was on 1st March 2024 and the Speaker was Simon Peaple and the talk was entitled "Lessons of the Hundred Days, Amiens to the Armistice".
Our next meeting is on Friday 5th April 2024. The speaker is Adam Prime on "Keeping open the Highway to India: The Defence of the Suez Canal" Details of our future talks for 2024 can be found here. |
Grave Commemoration Project
The Grave Commemoration Project was setup to remember the men & women who fell during the Great War. The names of those who lost their lives during the Great War can be found on Memorials to the Missing, a War Grave maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, local War Memorials or on a plaque in their local Church or place of work.
However, they are also remembered on family gravestones or memorials in local churchyards or cemeteries. Our aim is to visit churchyards and cemeteries in the Merseyside & Cheshire areas and take photographs of these memorials and add the details of these men & women to a database. So far we have collected details and photographs of over 2000 gravestones. For details of some of the gravestones we have taken pictures of click here. |

The Western Front Association was formed in 1980 to maintain interest in the period 1914-1918, to perpetuate the memory, courage and comradeship of those on all sides who served their countries in France and Flanders and their own countries during the Great War. It does not seek to glorify war and is non-political. For a modest annual subscription, our members receive a wide range of benefits. In particular, belonging to the WFA provides you with the opportunity of meeting like-minded people to learn, share, explore and exchange information and knowledge in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. You will also receive our regular, high-quality publications Stand To! and Bulletin in total six times a year.
Further information and details of membership can be found on the WFA website.
